Mathematical Definition of RMS Voltage (V_RMS)

Root Mean Square (RMS) Voltage is the statistical metric representing the effective DC-equivalent heating value of an alternating voltage:

Waveform RMS Voltage Formulas
Pure Sine Wave: V_RMS = V_Peak / √2 ≈ 0.7071 · V_Peak = V_p-p / 2.8284
Square Wave: V_RMS = V_Peak = V_p-p / 2
Triangle / Sawtooth Wave: V_RMS = V_Peak / √3 ≈ 0.5774 · V_Peak

Frequently Asked Questions

RMS Voltage (Root Mean Square Voltage) is the effective value of alternating current voltage that delivers the exact same heating power to a resistive load as an equivalent direct current (DC) voltage.
For a pure sine wave: V_RMS = (V_p-p / 2) / √2 = V_p-p / 2.8284. For example, a 120V AC household outlet has a peak-to-peak voltage of approximately 339.4 V p-p.
Standard 120V AC mains has a peak voltage of 120 × √2 = 169.7 Volts Peak. Standard 230V AC mains has a peak voltage of 230 × √2 = 325.3 Volts Peak.
Basic multimeters measure rectified average voltage and calibrate it assuming a pure sine wave, which yields errors up to 40% on distorted or non-sinusoidal waveforms. True-RMS multimeters calculate real heating power regardless of waveform distortion.
