Frequently Asked Questions
Watts is the standard unit of power (1 Joule per second). RMS Watts refers to Continuous Average Power calculated from True-RMS voltage and current (P = V_RMS² / R), which measures the continuous thermal work an amplifier or power supply can sustain without overheating.
Target RMS Voltage equals √(Power × Resistance), and Target RMS Current equals √(Power / Resistance). For 100W into 8 Ohms: V_RMS = √(100 × 8) = 28.28V, and I_RMS = √(100 / 8) = 3.54A.
In alternating current (AC), voltage and current continuously fluctuate. RMS represents the effective steady-state heating equivalent of direct current (DC). Calculating power using peak values would overestimate actual thermal work by 2x for pure sine waves.
Connect a True-RMS digital multimeter set to AC Volts across the speaker terminals while playing an uncompressed sine wave test tone. Square the measured voltage and divide by the load impedance (P = V_RMS² / R).
